Protecting the Great Barrier Reef

Burnett May Regional Group (BMRG) is pleased that UNESCO has made a draft recommendation to not list the Great Barrier Reef as "in danger".

This acknowledges the good work that's being done to protect the Reef, including BMRG projects on the Mary River and the Discovery Coast.

On the Kolan River alone, our work with partners saw 250,000 seedlings planted and 1.8km of riverbank repaired and revegetated to reduce sediment run-off, preventing 7000 tonnes of sediment from reaching the Reef.

More needs to be done, but it's terrific to see international recognition of our combined efforts so far.

This decision is also good news for our tourism operators and Reef communities who appreciate the unique environment in which we live and the importance of protecting it for future generations.
